Tariffs on India Could Spark Trade War: US Congressman-elect Suhas Subramanyam

US Congressman-elect Suhas Subramanyam has expressed strong opposition to imposing tariffs on India, warning that such a move could escalate into a trade war between the two nations.

Speaking to PTI, Subramanyam stated, “I don’t support imposing tariffs on India. I think it would be really bad. It would lead to a trade war, and that’s not beneficial for either country.”

His remarks come amid concerns over potential higher tariffs on Indian exports under the incoming Trump administration. During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump criticized India’s tariff policies and suggested introducing reciprocal taxes on countries like India and China.

Subramanyam emphasized the importance of economic collaboration between the two nations, noting, “There are many businesses doing remarkable work in India, and several Indian companies are expanding into the US. Strong economic ties will only strengthen both countries.”

As Subramanyam prepares to take office in the House of Representatives, which significantly influences US foreign policy, he highlighted the critical nature of the US-India relationship. “India is one of the largest democracies, and fostering strong ties between our countries is vital,” he said.

At 38, Subramanyam becomes the sixth Indian-American elected to the US House of Representatives, joining the so-called “Samosa Caucus” alongside Dr. Ami Bera, Pramila Jayapal, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ro Khanna, and Shri Thanedar. He represents Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, making history as the first Indian-American elected from the East Coast.

Advocating Immigration Reform

Subramanyam also called for a comprehensive overhaul of the US immigration system. “I’ve heard many concerns about immigration, particularly from people on H-1B visas seeking pathways to citizenship or at least Green Cards,” he said. “We need to focus on legal immigration reforms and provide solutions for these individuals.”

While expressing support for border security, he stressed the need for a balanced approach. “There’s been a lot of discussion about undocumented immigrants, but we need to address broader issues in our immigration system,” he added.

Supporting the Federal Workforce

Subramanyam voiced opposition to any plans by the Trump administration to cut federal jobs or cancel federal contracts. “I want to ensure that government overhauls don’t equate to firing federal workers or reducing opportunities,” he stated.

As a representative from Virginia, home to many federal employees, Subramanyam pledged to be a staunch advocate for the federal workforce. “I will stand against any efforts to cut federal jobs and will work to support the dedicated workers in my district,” he affirmed.

With a focus on democracy, economic collaboration, and advocacy for workers and immigrants, Subramanyam aims to be a transformative leader as he begins his tenure in Congress.
